How to explain a short role on a UK CV (without hiding dates)

Published 26 September 2026

Contracts end, companies restructure, roles turn out not to be what was advertised, and life happens. A role of a few months is common and, on its own, tells an employer very little. What worries readers is a gap in the story — so the fix is a little context, not creative dates.

Keep the real dates

Show months and years (for example “Mar 2025 – Jun 2025”). Don't round to years to make a role look longer, and don't leave a job off if it's relevant or likely to come up in referencing. Employers may check dates, and a mismatch creates a far bigger problem than a short role ever would.

Add one neutral line of context — if it helps

You don't owe anyone an explanation, and you should never share health or personal details you'd rather keep private. But a short, factual phrase often answers the question before it's asked: “Fixed-term contract”, “Role made redundant in restructure”, “Maternity cover”, “Left to relocate”.

Before

Sales Assistant, Harbour Home Stores, 2025

The question

Was this a fixed-term or temporary role, and what did you actually do in those months?

Truthful after

Sales Assistant (seasonal contract), Harbour Home Stores, Oct 2025 – Jan 2026. Served customers on a busy tills rota over the Christmas period; trained two later starters on returns.

Fictional example. The dates stayed honest; the context and one concrete task did the work.

Let the work speak

One or two lines about what you did — and learned — is usually enough. If the role was very short or unrelated, you can group it (“Temporary roles, 2024: warehouse and retail”) as long as the dates are still accurate.

Before

Admin Officer, Northfield Clinic — 3 months

The question

What's one thing you handled independently there, however small?

Truthful after

Admin Officer, Northfield Clinic, Apr 2025 – Jul 2025 (post ended when funding closed). Ran the appointment reminder list and cleared a backlog of scanned referrals.

What not to do

  • Don't stretch dates or merge two jobs into one.
  • Don't apologise or over-explain on the CV; save detail for interview if asked.
  • Don't invent a reason. “Contract ended” is only right if it did.
