CV gaps for Teacher

Teacher CVs usually miss the facts a school looks for first: qualified status, the age range and subjects taught, and evidence of impact on pupils. Add those clearly and keep every claim free of pupil names.

The 4 gaps to check

  1. Status and qualifications unclear

Why it matters: Schools need to see quickly whether you hold QTS and what you trained in.

How to close it honestly: State QTS or equivalent, your PGCE or route in, and the year, and mention safeguarding training you have completed. Never put certificate numbers on your CV.

  2. Age range, subjects and exam boards missing

Why it matters: "Taught English" does not say which pupils or courses.

How to close it honestly: Name key stages, subjects, exam boards and class sizes where true.

  3. Impact not shown

Why it matters: Lesson delivery is expected, so outcomes are what stand out.

How to close it honestly: Describe progress or results you can share without identifying pupils, such as a rise in a class's results or a scheme of work you wrote that others adopted, only if true.

  4. Wider school life left off

Why it matters: Clubs, trips, pastoral roles and leadership are part of many appointments.

How to close it honestly: Add one line for each role you actually held, such as form tutor, subject lead or club organiser.

Questions that find your real evidence

  • Which classes and age groups do you teach, and for which exams?
  • What changed for your pupils because of something you introduced?
  • Which responsibility beyond your own classroom do you hold?

Only add what is true. If you cannot back a line up with a real example, leave it out.
