CV gaps for Nurse

Nursing CVs most often leave out the details a hiring team checks first: registration, the clinical setting and patient group, and up-to-date mandatory training. Those facts, plus clear dates, matter more than long descriptions of duties.

The 4 gaps to check

  1. Registration not stated clearly

Why it matters: Employers need to see that you are registered and in what field.

How to close it honestly: State your NMC registration and field of practice, and your PIN only if the application asks for it. Do not guess or round any dates.

  2. Setting and patient group unclear

Why it matters: "Worked on a busy ward" does not say what kind of care you gave.

How to close it honestly: Name the specialty, type of unit, patient group and the shifts or caseload you covered, with no patient details.

  3. Training and competencies out of sight

Why it matters: Skills such as medication administration, IV therapy or basic life support are often buried or missing.

How to close it honestly: List competencies you hold with the year last completed, and leave out anything that has lapsed unless you say so.

  4. Gaps and moves between placements

Why it matters: Rotations, agency work or breaks can look like unexplained gaps.

How to close it honestly: Give month and year for each post, label agency or bank work as such, and add a brief true reason for any break if you wish.

Questions that find your real evidence

  • What patient group and setting do you work in day to day?
  • Which clinical skills have you signed off, and when?
  • What did you improve on your ward or team that others now use?

Only add what is true. If you cannot back a line up with a real example, leave it out.
