CV gaps for Accountant

Accountant CVs most often leave the reader unsure about qualification status, the size and type of work handled, and which systems and compliance areas were yours. State these plainly and the rest reads with confidence.

The 4 gaps to check

  1. Qualification status unclear

Why it matters: AAT, ACCA, ACA, CIMA and part-qualified are very different positions.

How to close it honestly: State exactly what you hold, or how many exams you have passed and when you expect to finish.

  2. Scope and scale missing

Why it matters: A reader cannot tell a sole bookkeeper from a team member in a large department.

How to close it honestly: Say how many clients or entities, the size of ledgers or turnover where you can, and whether you prepared, reviewed or signed off.

  3. Compliance areas not named

Why it matters: Tax and statutory work differs by role.

How to close it honestly: Name what you handled, such as VAT returns, payroll, corporation tax or statutory accounts, where true.

  4. Software without context

Why it matters: A list such as Xero, Sage or QuickBooks says little.

How to close it honestly: Add what you did in each, such as month end, reconciliations or reporting.

Questions that find your real evidence

  • What is your exact qualification status?
  • How many clients or entities did you handle at once?
  • What did you speed up or fix in month end?

Only add what is true. If you cannot back a line up with a real example, leave it out.
